I have been in the mortgage industry since 1992. I was inspired to get into the mortgage industry because of my love of Real Estate, and helping others achieve home ownership. There is nothing more exciting than owning your own home. Knowing that you are building your net worth, and not your landlord's, is very satisfying. I enjoy following up with my clients after doing their loans, and the sentiment that I get from them is "Thank you!" Be it a first time homebuyer, a couple coming back to buy a vacation home or refinancing their existing home, there is nothing more rewarding for me than seeing my clients and their children achieve their goals.
How has the mortgage industry changed since you started, and what would you expect in the future?
The mortgage industry has evolved tremendously over the past several years. Now more than ever you have to be creative to achieve the goal of home ownership. Some of the loans we have been able to help our clients with recently are 80/10/10 loans, where the client comes in with 10% down and we give them a 80% first and a 10% second. This option was popular back in the early 2000 era, but had since gone away. It is back today with Guaranteed Rate. Another one is 5% down with no mortgage insurance. That has really helped client's save a lot of money with their reduced mortgage payments. Lastly, FHA loans have been my most popular due to their flexibility in qualifying and in low down payment. FHA loans really do give first time homebuyers the ability to fulfill their home ownership dreams.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
When I meet with clients, I stress the importance of getting pre-approved for a mortgage before ever looking for a home. I have seen it all too often the disappointment in a client that has made an offer on a home only to find out that they don't qualify for that home. By meeting with me prior to looking at homes, you can be guaranteed a home loan with one of the largest growing company in America. Knowing exactly what you can qualify for takes the worry out of financing and allows you to concentrate on negotiating the best possible price for your new home.
Summary of where you grew up: family, affiliations, college, high school, etc.
I grew up in Wheeling, IL a suburb of Chicago. I have a BBA from Western Michigan University and was a collegiate athlete there. I have traveled all over the world with gymnastics, seeing many amazing places in the world and landing here in San Diego in 1992. I am married with two kids and find that can be my most challenging role in life. Nothing is more rewarding and challenging than being a father. I am a member of First United Methodist church in San Diego.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I love my Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. No better place to clear my mind than in the southern California sunshine on my bike.
