What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
The first thing: listen to their goals. Are they looking to retire in this home? Will they eventually need to downsize, or will their family grow? At what point would an ARM make sense? Review the goals with a mortgage calculator and payment schedule to determine the best available options.

Tell us about a mortgage product that consumers may not be aware of?
We have PMI-elimination programs where the premiums are either paid by the seller at closing, or by the bank on behalf of the customer. This allows the buyer to put down less than 20% and still not pay monthly Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI). The major lenders typically don't offer this program or even know it exists! By not paying monthly PMI, buyers can save thousands per year on their mortgage payments.

What part of the home loan process do customers find most difficult and how do you help them through it?
One of the most challenging aspects is the exact amount needed to bring to closing, how the earnest money get applied and how the taxes are credited at the closing. Once my team sends the final documents, I provide the HUD/RESPA to the buyer as well as the agents and attorneys to ensure everyone has a thorough understanding of the settlement paperwork. There are often questions from the buyer that I'm always happy to answer.

Summary of where you grew up: family, affiliations, college, high school, etc.
I grew up in the Northwest Suburbs in Cary with a younger bother. Attended the University of Illinois Chicago and have lived throughout Chicago's neighborhoods for over 15 years. I run a chapter of Business Networking International (BNI) for small and large business owners that are built by referral. We strategize on how to grow our businesses together. My wife, Amelia and I have been married just over a year and are currently building a house in Bucktown on Chicago's Northside.

Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
Along with my mortgage team, I'm a guitar player and songwriter. On the weekends, you'll find me watching the Bears, Blackhawks and Cubs. Often with the game on mute and a book in my hands. Thanks for your interest in Guaranteed Rate!
