MBA from Northern Illinois, started in real estate over 20 years ago and came to Guaranteed Rate in 2006. How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
I've been in the mortgage business for 6 years and in real estate for more than 20 years. The mortgage business has given me the opportunity to provide additional service to home owners and home buyers.
Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
Every customer I work with is a referral. I am proud of that. I like working with all kinds of situations. For the top qualified/experienced borrowers, I am happy to provide the easiest online service with the best products and pricing. For the more challenging loans, I am able to offer a wide array of products to get loans closed. Both are very satisfying. I have found the following to be most important: Listening! Find out the goals and be the expert who knows the products that will work best!
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
I love working with first time home buyers. With my experience, I am able to help in many ways and keep most as both future clients and referral partners. The advice varies for each buyer. We discuss the real estate aspect of the purchase through my 20+ years as a licensed Realtor. We discuss the neighborhood and schools as my 20+ years as a dad and we discuss the finance and mortgage part of the deal as an experienced loan officer and MBA.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
Buying a home is stressful and the mortgage process can add to that. Using a highly rated company (Guaranteed Rate) a buyer should have the confidence that they are working with a professional in the industry. Expectations should be set by the loan officer and the requirements for underwriting should be clearly explained to the client. At times there are unavoidable issues but if the loan officer has done their job of communicating, the stress level should be minimal and the underwriting process smooth.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
In addition to helping families with their home loans, I coach baseball. I have a passion for the sport and I love to teach. Currently, I coach the freshman at a local high school as well as work with several younger kids on their baseball and softball skills.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
Prior to getting into the mortgage industry, I was a scholar athlete and played football and baseball through college and semi-pro.
