Started this prossess with quicken loans, what a fn nightmare that was, 3.5 months later, I fired them, I had enough, then I was testing the waters AGAIN, & guaranteed rate called me 20 sec after I hit send, then about a minute or two later I was talking to Marcelo Barahona, thank god I was talking to someone who knows what there doing, he said he has never seen a situation like mine ( nor I think he wants to again for a long wile ) there were some ruff spots, but him & his team never gave up.

About Marcelo

It all starts with a roof. After spending several years assisting clients in the legal market, I found myself in a position where I had reached the ceiling in my career and thought about pivoting into an industry where I could have a larger impact on my community and have a higher ceiling where I could grow and advance. I did not know where to turn until I saw Guaranteed Rate's rooftop, complete with open green spaces, tranquil fountains, and comfortable couches. So I ventured to join the team and it's been the perfect fit for me since. GR has allowed me to use my skills in service to reach a much larger audience and have supported me in the growth of my business.

I am originally from Miami, Florida and graduated from the University of Florida with a BA in Political Science. The degree has been surprisingly helpful in teaching me to negotiate interests between buyers, sellers, agents, and attorneys to find the best solutions for my clients, whom I serve with tenacity and a positive attitude.

When I find a free moment in my day, I like to take a moment to enjoy our rooftop, so I can remind myself of how this journey all started, and to remind myself that there is no limit to how we can serve. After all, it all started with a roof!

What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
Identify their needs and goals as quickly as possible and come up with creative solutions to accomplish their goals.
Tell us about a specific challenging borrowing situation and how you got the mortgage closed and funded.
I was working with a borrower in WV who had an FHA loan get destroyed by Quicken. So I took over the file and tried to get him to the closing table. The appraisal came in $50k short, the property had title liens, and UW required a land survey to determine the distance between the well and septic tank would not cause any issues with the local water table. The issue was that UW wanted these issues resolved right before Christmas. So, while I was with family in Miami, I was on the phone with the Berkeley Springs, WV health department pushing them to get a certificate emailed to me, to send to UW and receive the conditional approval, on Christmas Eve. Just to get rid of me, they provided the documents, I relayed them to the proper channels and the deal subsequently closed.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
This is a collaborative process that will require effort from both sides, myself as the LO and the borrowers. We have to be committed together that we will work on this loan together to get them to closing. Without cooperation, we will never survive.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
The trick to having a smooth underwriting process is responsiveness to document requests and trusting your team. If you provide us with the right materials in a timely fashion, we will make sure the deal gets done.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
Closing a loan when nobody else thought was possible is by far my greatest joy.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I am probably the only loan officer in the company who has fallen in quicksand in the Amazon Jungle and has lived to tell the tale.
