Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
My customers are generally very bright, well-informed, white collar professionals in the Research Triangle market. Many are professors at UNC and Duke, some are entrepreneurs, and some work for the many corporations - large and small - that call the Triangle home. What they appreciate most is my background in personal and corporate finance, and my willingness to translate into recommendations that best meet the needs of their family. For me, it's an opportunity to give back to the residents of the area in which I grew up.
What are the pros and cons of a fixed rate mortgage versus an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM)?
Most people gravitate toward fixed rate mortgages and never consider adjustable rates. And in many cases this is good counsel. Nevertheless, there are times when an adjustable rate (ARM) actually makes sense to consider. Examples include jumbo loans, where an intermediate term ARM can save tens of thousands of dollars over a 5-7 year time horizon. Also, when an income windfall is anticipated, an ARM should be considered. And of course, when a customer has some visibility that the ownership of their home is likely a 5-7 year proposition, an ARM should be considered. I never try to push a product on my customers, but being aware of options such as ARMs helps us jointly make the best informed decision for their mortgage.
What part of the home loan process do customers find most difficult and how do you help them through it?
Communication. It\'s what makes relationships work. For the time my customers are working with me on a home purchase or refinance, we are having a business relationship. Just like any relationship, the best ones flourish when there is good communication. My team - my processor Dawn and my closer Amber - are the best in the business in keeping my customers informed during the loan processing, underwriting, and closing. And of course I\'m always available to answer questions as they come up. Great terms - we have them. Great products - we have them. Service and communication is what keeps my customers coming back.
Summary of where you grew up: family, affiliations, college, high school, etc.
I am truly a home-grown product of Chapel Hill, having gone to Glenwood, Phillips, Chapel Hill High School, UNC for undergraduate school and Duke for graduate school. I have two children - one at Estes Hills Elementary and one at Phillips Middle School. I work in my home market because I know it so well, and because it is a privilege to work in and for the community that gave me so much growing up.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I am a fitness nut, having grown up a Junior Olympic swimmer. I am still a gym rat and still swimming to stay in shape. It helps me keep sharp and alert in an industry that demands that I stay at my competitive best.
