How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
17 years ago I was working as a debt collector. It was a very tough job and I was tired of taking money out of peoples hands every day. I was approached by someone I had a business relationship with who worked as a loan officer as he thought I would be a great fit for their team. Getting into this industry was the best decision I could have made. It's much more fun to give people money than it is to take it from them.
Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
There is no such thing as a typical customer. Everyone has different wants, needs and goals and it is my job to not only ask what those wants, needs and goals are, but to understand why they are important to a client. Throughout the mortgage process, I take my time to answer each and every question that comes up in a clear and uncomplicated manner.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
I feel that a detailed first conversation is the best route to finding the best home loan for someone's particular needs. That initial conversation sets the tone for the entire transaction and really helps me understand what would be in a client's best interest. We not only discuss current financial goals but where a client wants to be in 5 or 10 years. Together, we put together a plan to get them there.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
ASK QUESTIONS!!! LOTS AND LOTS OF QUESTIONS!!! One of the biggest fears of a first time home buyer is that their questions may not be the right one to ask or that they have asked too many questions already. This is not the case at all. The home buying process can be an incredibly frustrating experience for anyone if they do not feel 100% comfortable. As a first time buyer, you have never done this before, but I have, so keep the questions coming.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
The most important thing a client can do to insure a smooth process is to provide any requested documentation quickly. This leads to a painless and efficient loan process.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
In my spare time, I enjoy family time. I am married with 3 amazing children and I spend every free minute I have with them. I am active in the Bartlett Raiders youth football organization as last season I was a volunteer referee for my older son's flag football team. This year, my younger son will be joining the Raiders on the flag team and my older son will be moving on to tackle. I also enjoy playing pool and bowling.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I really enjoy playing music. I sing, play guitar, piano, drums, bass and have never had a lesson (except for 3 piano lessons when I was 12 years old). I play by ear and couldn't read sheet music if my life depended on it. I have never found an instrument that I couldn't pick up and figure out with a little practice.
