How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
I have been in the mortgage business for a little over 5 years now. I spent 13 years as a Golf Professional before being laid off in 2010. I spent some time at home with my young daughter before starting to explore my options about my next career move. A Loan Officer friend of mine mentioned she thought I would do well in the industry, so I hopped on board and learned the industry from the ground up. I have been originating ever since and haven’t look back. I love what I do, and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
Stick with your most comfortable monthly payment when determining your price range, not your maximum pre-approval amount. Just because you may have been pre-approved for more than you thought you would be does not necessarily mean you should spend that much. The average time first time home buyers remain in their first home is 5 years. Let the equity build during these years, so that when it’s time to move, perhaps you can afford that bigger home and not have that big payment.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
NO SECRETS. Full trust between the LO and the client is the single most important part of the entire process. If the client is completely upfront, honest, and provides everything that is required, this will lead to a more seamless process. Any secrets will inevitably lead to future complications and possibly the inability to close.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
I am an avid golfer. Being in the golf business for 13 years before becoming an LO, one of my true passions is still golf. Golf still teaches me lessons that I use in everyday life. Problem solving, patience, and respect are key elements not only in the game of golf, but also in life.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I spent a year with a Youth Ministry holding conventions for teenagers in stadiums all over the country. I had the awesome opportunity to see small towns, big cities, Natural Wonders, landmarks, and meet people from all walks of life I never would have otherwise. This one year commitment was a life-changing event 20 years ago has led to friendships and memories that will last forever.
