How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
Iýve been in the mortgage business for 17 years. Originally, I got into mortgage lending for the opportunity to help people realize the dream of home ownership. Today, I still get excited every time a happy client becomes a new homeowner. I couldnýt imagine doing anything else for a living!
Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
My typical client is either a happy past client who needs another loan, or someone referred to me by that happy client, friend, family member, Realtor or other business partner. The typical questions I receive are generally related to the mortgage process, such as what the steps are, how long it will take, and when they will receive keys.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
I sit down with every client in person, and learn as much as possible about their goals, reasons for purchasing, time frames, and how much money they would like to put toward the home purchase. From there, I offer the loan options that make the most sense for their specific circumstances.
Tell us about a mortgage product that consumers may not be aware of?
Many first time buyers are not aware that you don't need 20% down to purchase a home. You can purchase a home with as little as 3.5% down, and there are down payment assistance programs that will pay some or part of that amount for you if you qualify.
How has the mortgage industry changed since you started, and what would you expect in the future?
The mortgage industry has changed quite a bit since I started in 1999. Most notably, in recent years, the guidelines have become stricter and the process has become far more complex for a loan originator. More than ever before, it’s important to work with a mortgage professional who knows the loan guidelines, has experience getting tough loans closed, and has a great company behind them dedicated to getting your loan closed on time.
What part of the home loan process do customers find most difficult and how do you help them through it?
I think the part of the process most customers find most difficult is the waiting and worrying during the process. As a mortgage professional, I think itýs extremely important to put myself in the clientsý shoes and remember that they donýt do mortgage loans every day and in many cases, itýs their first time. I make sure I communicate at every step and let clients know exactly what to expect, so they donýt have to be concerned about what is going on behind the scenes.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
By far, itýs helping someone buy their first home. Of course, I love helping my clients with all their mortgage needs over the years, but being there with a first time buyer when they close on their new home is just an amazingly satisfying experience.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
I love spending time with my wife, Jodie, and 2 daughters, Emma and Marlie. Whether it’s taking weekend fishing trips or just hanging out at home playing video games with the kids or watching a movie, we always have fun and I always look forward to it.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
Iýve always been fascinated with computers. As a kid in the 80s, I spent countless hours programming and taking computers apart to try to figure out how they worked. Iýve built my own PCs, and I can easily spend hours trying to figure out why a computer isnýt working properly and fixing it and love every minute of it.
