Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
My typical customer is a first time home buyer looking to renovate a home they are buying. The most common question I get is, “Why don’t more people know they can include home renovations as part of their mortgage when buying or refinancing a home?”
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
The advice I give to new or first time home buyers is if you plan on making improvements to the home in the future, consider making them now when you are buying. I have had so many customers come back to refinance credit card debt, or home equity loans because of home improvement projects. It is usually cheaper to make the improvements, and include the cost in the mortgage when buying, than waiting and accruing additional debt at higher rates.
Tell us about a mortgage product that consumers may not be aware of?
A mortgage product most customers are not aware of is a renovation loan when purchasing or refinancing a property. This product gives you the ability to include any necessary, or desired improvements you would like to make to the property. The way we do this is by appraising the property as if those improvements were already done, allowing us to use the after improved value and condition.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
The best way to make sure the underwriting process goes smooth is to give all of the required documents promptly, and ask a lot of questions.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
The most satisfaction I get with my job is helping people achieve their dreams.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family. Since the spring and summer months are my busiest time of the year, winter sports and winter vacations have become a big part of our family life. My daughter started snowboarding at four years old, and my son was three years old. My kids have proclaimed the winter as their favorite time of year. I feel we have the best of both worlds living close to the beach and a short drive to the mountains.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I was once trying to become a certified skydiver. I was unable to complete my certification because of a shoulder injury that required surgery. I regained full motion of my arm again about two years after the surgery. At that point I no longer had the time or enthusiasm needed to travel to the jump site to complete my certification. I do think about the jumps I made, and have to admit it was a little crazy.
