Hi. My name is Erik Torgerson. Welcome to my website!

I have been in the mortgage business since 1998 working in a variety of different roles. Through these opportunities over the years, I have learned ways to make the mortgage process more borrower friendly. I am able to take the highly qualified borrower through the mortgage process with less intrusion than they will have from the typical lender. I am also able to get the high quality borrower better opportunities in the market.

I have one of the best support teams in the industry. When you work with me you will also work with Deanna Marchal, Michael Faulhaber and Ruth Bauer.

Deanna is my assistant and she has over 3 years of experience in real estate and mortgages. She is there to assist with a smooth mortgage process. She will contact you for any follow up information we may need. You may also contact her should I not be available and she will handle your request or get it to me as quickly as possible.

Michael Faulhaber is my mortgage consultant, or MC. He will help prepare the file for the underwriter to look at. He has been with Guaranteed Rate since 2005. He makes sure we have all of the documentation we need prior to sending it to the underwriter. He is GRate at what he does and that is a benefit to our borrowers because the loan gets approved faster when it is sent with the correct documentation the first time!!!

Ruth Bauer is my loan coordinator, or LC. She will take the file once the underwriter has looked at it and let us know if there are any other conditions required prior to closing. She also helps coordinate the closing with our closing attorney so that the borrower doesn’t have to get involved. She has been with Guaranteed Rate since 2008! She is a GRate asset and with her on the file you are assured a smooth closing experience.

By having a team dedicated to my borrowers we are able to create a smooth transaction from our Digital Mortgage application to the closing table. Since Guaranteed Rate services most of their loans the GRate experience will continue until you pay off the loan. Once that happens you should call me and we can start all over!

Erik interview Q&A

How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
I have been in the mortgage business since 1999. I was inspired to get into it by two friends who I knew well. Once I looked into it, I found it to be poorly served, with most people charging entirely too much. I thought that I could provide better service by listening to my customer’s needs and showing them the different opportunities they have as opposed to placing them into the same product everyone else was using. I found that if I explained the different products available my customer could make the choice that was best for them.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
One of the things I want to share with new or first time home buyers is how much information and opportunity there is when they work with Guaranteed Rate. The tools that I can provide through my website allow a borrower to apply for a mortgage and find out if they are preapproved in less than 15 minutes without having to actually sit down in an office and bring all of their documentation in. On the flip-side of that, you can schedule an appointment and have a face to face meeting about what your home buying plans are and how we can best accommodate those plans. It is all about what you are most comfortable with in getting started. My team and I are here to accommodate you!
What part of the home loan process do customers find most difficult and how do you help them through it?
This is a trick question, isn’t it?!? Every customer has a different outlook on the mortgage process and most of those outlooks aren’t positive. I have seen the mortgage process compared unfavorably to visiting the dentist!!! People have different areas of the process that they are apprehensive about. I have found there is one solution to all of these different problems… Communication! That is why I have a team that is dedicated to helping make your experience as transparent as possible. You will have updates emailed to you as each milestone is reached and you will have a website where you can view the current condition of your loan. All members of my team are listed on that site and all, including myself, welcome calls from our clients!!!
Summary of where you grew up: family, affiliations, college, high school, etc.
I grew up in Urbandale, IA. I went to K-12 at Urbandale Schools. I then attended Drake University. I played golf at Drake and worked in the golf industry at several different golf shops in the Des Moines area while attending Urbandale High School and Drake. After college I took a job in the golf industry that took me to Minneapolis for 5 years. That is when I was introduced to the mortgage business. I fell in love with the challenge of finding the right product and giving great service during the mortgage process. So many people expect it to be a horrible experience. I try to make the experience at least tolerable, maybe even fun! I moved back to the Des Moines area as I had a lot larger group of contacts here. It has been a great decision! I am currently living in Clive, IA with my wife, Angela, and two daughters, Sophie and Ava. We are active at Des Moines Golf and Country Club, Valley High School, West Des Moines Soccer Club, Lutheran Church of Hope, Drake University, Iowa Homeless Youth Society, Guaranteed Rate Foundation and Positive Outreach Program.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
Another trick question, huh?!? I am guessing I shouldn’t say anything here that is too interesting!!! After college I played golf on a mini-tour in Texas. I quickly found out that I was more interested in finding out about the people I was playing with than beating them! I wanted to beat them, but I actually cared about them by the time we were done with 18 holes. I also found out that most of them didn’t care at all about me! They cared about beating me. That is when I decided my talents were best used in sales and playing golf on Wednesday afternoon for fun! I look forward to an opportunity to use these talents to help guide you through the mortgage process!
