How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
I have been in the mortgage business for 14 years. I have always had in interest in finance and economics. After positions in consumer finance and consumer banking I went into the mortgage lending area in 2001.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
I think the biggest step in the home loan process is to find out as much as possible about a clients' needs, wants, and goals. It is important to answer as many questions as possible up front. This allows us to work together to make sure that their mortgage is structured in a way that best fits their current and future plans.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
My best advice to new or first time home buyers would be to make sure you have your budget and cash reserves in mind before starting to look. The first step is to decide on a monthly amount that you would like to spend on a mortgage payment while keeping mind what other costs go along with home ownership. Secondly, come up with a plan to have cash reserves for all of the situations that go along with home ownership. Unlike renting, if the furnace quits working, you have to fix it now!
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
The best thing that borrowers can do to ensure a smooth mortgage underwriting process is to not hold anything back when giving information and always ask your mortgage professional before doing anything that involves money. The items that put wrinkles in loan approvals are usually the "unknowns" that a loan officer wasn't aware of at the time of loan application. This doesn't mean that everything has to stay the same during the loan process but just be sure to ask your mortgage professional how best to handle situations. They can help guide things down the right path and avoid hassles.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
I think the most satisfying part about being a loan officer is our ability to see a client's entire financial picture and help put them on the best path possible. We can help put them in contact with professionals that are qualified to help them with tax planning, financial planning, estate planning, debt management, credit management, etc... It is very satisfying to help bring to light ideas and options that may help a client well into the future.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
When not helping people with their home loans, I enjoy time with my wife and twin boys. This may include golfing, boating, skiing, snowmobiling, travelling or just working on projects of all varieties.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
Aside from being in the mortgage world I like to be an "I can fix anything" type of person. While life with twin boys now makes time the roadblock, I usually approach any project with the thought in mind "If it's broke, I can fix it". The key is knowing when I have met my match and agreeing to call in the professionals.
