About Mike

In my 15 yearsý experience in Mortgage Lending, I have closed hundreds of loans in all shapes and sizes. In that time, I have learned one very important thing that most lenders donýt understand: Itýs not about me. Itýs about you, your financial goals, and what I can do to help you achieve them. I commit to providing that to all my clients.

I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI and currently still live there with my wife, Debbie, and our four kids. When I am not assisting my clients with their loans I enjoy spending every free moment with my family.

How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
15 years. Meeting new people and being able to help them.
Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
Everyone is my customer from the first time home buyer to the person looking to set up their finances to meet their retirement goals.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
I dig into their short, middle, and long term goals to help construct the best loan options to meet these.
How long have you been in the mortgage business? What awards have you won?

What are the pros and cons of a fixed rate mortgage versus an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM)?
A fixed rate mortgage is great if you plan on being in the home long term. However, an ARM can be a great way to create cash flow, especially if you know you are going to be moving or paying off the loan before the adjustment period starts.
Tell us about a specific challenging borrowing situation and how you got the mortgage closed and funded.
I don't have one specific situation. However I specialize in Jumbo financing, which can be difficult to get borrowers approved. A lot of these individuals have different income sources and I look at everything to make sure we can get them approved when maybe they didn't think they could, or didn't want to deal with the "hassle" of all the paperwork.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
Make sure you look at all the loan options before you settle on a loan. Sometimes there are better products that people don't know about.
Tell us about a mortgage product that consumers may not be aware of?
Renovation loans
How has the mortgage industry changed since you started, and what would you expect in the future?
Guidelines have gotten tougher to get approved, but more streamlined or the same for everyone. Hopefully in the future we see more options available for people who don't fit into the traditional mortgage.
What part of the home loan process do customers find most difficult and how do you help them through it?
The paperwork needed for approval.
What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
They don't understand the information needed, and why it is needed. They don't know all the options they have available to them. They don't understand the timing of how long things take during the process.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
Get all the paperwork to us upfront.
