What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
Being attentive to the borrower's needs and expectations is instrumental in securing the best possible mortgage; whether it's for a purchase or a refinance, whether it's a first time homebuyer or one buying a second home. Asking pointed questions about the borrower's financing preferences as well as prequalifying the potential borrower, ensures the best outcome.
How has the mortgage industry changed since you started, and what would you expect in the future?
When I first began working in this industry in the '80's, there were far fewer financing options available and there was less regulatory oversight. The industry grew considerably in the '90's, with more players and more options becoming available, so that financing became feasible for virtually every type of borrower. The pendulum has now swung back a bit, and the mortgage industry has become more heavily regulated and more conservative in its lending criteria, resulting in fewer eligible borrowers. I believe lenders will ultimately ease up in the future, and borrowing eligibility will expand.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
During the initial consultation with the mortgage broker, it is essential for the prospective borrrower to provide all the information pertinent to the loan application, to prevent surprises later on. It is equally important for the borrower to provide the mortgage broker a complete loan application package to avoid delays in underwriting the loan application due to insufficient material or information.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
As a mortgage broker, I try to step back and view the loan application process from the borrower's perspective, in addition to my professional perspective; to not always view loan process as a bunch of dry calculations and ratios. So when the loan closes and the borrower is pleased with the rate and terms of the loan, and the service I've provided, it gratifies me on a professional as well as personal level.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I am an avid walker and hiker. Living in Manhattan is perfect for walking. I walk at least four miles each day during the week, and easily 20 miles over the weekend. It's the best way to see this city, or any city!
