About Sheryl

I have always called myself "The Mortgage Lady". I love helping and educating everyone I meet about making the biggest decision of their life - taking out their first mortgage and buying their first home. I originally was a financial analyst and accountant and found that job was just a job - and wasn't my passion. I met Jeff Lake, a # 1 producer in Illinois and the rest is history. I felt the excitement about helping someone qualify and buy their first home. I felt the warm and fuzzies, and I quickly knew I made a difference in many people's lives. I was the first female loan officer at First Home Mortgage in 1989 (the mortgage business was a male dominated business). I brought to the table warmth, patience and understanding in putting together a personal mortgage strategy to help many young families buy their first home. I quickly became a success in the business, doing the more difficult FHA loans and offering everyone a "second opinion" for the mortgage they were looking for. By the way, when I got into the business in 1989, the 30 year fixed rate was 11% without any points. I like to think I bring my education and accounting background into the business. I give each of my clients a quick Homebuying 101 Class if needed. I am originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but grew up on Long Island, New York. I graduated from SUNY at Stonybrook with a degree in Political Science and Education. I later went to DePaul University to take my accounting classes. However, it was my unhappiness with just being an accouontant that took me on my journey to become a mortgage professional. I am married for over 40 years to my husband, Andy, and we have raised our 2 sons, Matthew and Neil, and lived in Buffalo Grove for over 37 years. My boys are graduates of Stevenson High School. Our family has been active in the community and since both boys played travel sports, that is what got me into networking with many young families to buy their first home. I am a proud grandmother of 2 - Logan and Jordan Ackerson. In my spare time, when I am not working, I am active in Hadassah - a women's organization that raises funds for much needed medical research around the world. Since my mom and 2 sisters are breast cancer survivors, I personally have raised thousands of dollars to fund several Cancer Awareness Programs and Research. When I take a break from my mortgage business, I love to travel with my family and of course enjoy sports - especially basketball and baseball.

Sheryl interview Q&A

How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
I have been originating mortgages for over 38 years. What inspires me is the satisfaction in knowing I make a difference in someone's life as I help guide my clients to make the best mortgage decision and provide a stress free experience. I put the mortgage puzzle pieces together and give my clients several mortgage strategies so they can make an educated choice.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
Before you go shopping & looking for the right house - get pre-approved and know you have your financing in place for a house that is well within your budget. I always thought it was hard to look at houses with price tags when no one breaks it down into a monthly payment. People often ask me - Sheryl, I know I am qualified for this much, but what should I really spend to live comfortably? There is a difference between being pre-qualified - which is typically the highest amount that someone should spend. I take the time with first time homebuyers if they want to plan out a mortgage budget that will work with their actual budget. I like to think I am just not a loan officer but a mortgage planner.
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
I take a complete loan application and require all the documentation upfront so we are not running around at the last minute needing something. I always tell my clients to keep their loan officer informed of any changes in their credit or employment. Borrowers and loan officers need to be attached at the hip from loan application to closing. I like to give my borrowers weekly status updates and check in with them to see if they have any questions, big or small. I also remind borrowers to not take out any new credit or make job changes without speaking with me. Most important, I work from my cell phone and am always available week nights and weekends, which is when people need me. I am not the typical banker and refuse to be 1-800 not there.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
I don't go home until you get your own home, too! I love helping and meeting new people and taking the stress out of the biggest purchase of their lives!
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
My friends, family and kids say I could talk to a dead person. I love people and learning about everyone. Being 1 of 5 girls in my family you had to speak up. Believe it or not, I won a basketball contest when I was a teenager - 10 out of 10 - impressive ...
