How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
I began working as a mortgage loan officer in April 2000. I had a friend working as a loan officer who encouraged me to join. It seemed like a great way for me to utilize my math and interpersonal skills, while helping people. I jumped in and never looked back!
Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
I don't think I have a "typical" customer type. I stay current on guidelines of all products, so my customers range from first time homebuyers who need a lot of help and guidance through the process, to repeat or move-up buyers, and everything in between. I am knowledgeable in Conventional, FHA, USDA, VA, Down Payment Assistance, Renovation, and Jumbo loans, just to name a few.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
Communication is key. I really try to uncover the whole picture when speaking to a customer about their home loan. It's not a generic process, and what is right for one borrower is not going to be the best fit for another borrower. Listening, asking questions and understanding the individual situation helps me to cater a loan specifically for each borrower.
How long have you been in the mortgage business? What awards have you won?
I have been in the mortgage business since April 2000. Over my career, I have regularly been a top producer, earning National Achiever awards. I also received a consumer choice award through Columbus Monthly, the Five Star Professional award in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
How has the mortgage industry changed since you started, and what would you expect in the future?
The better question would be how hasn't the mortgage industry changed since I started! When I began my career, it was sort of like the wild, wild west of mortgage products and regulations. Borrowers could easily be approved for mortgages, many times with very little documentation. Then, the housing market crashed and the regulations tightened significantly. After the recovery, guidelines loosened up a bit, and we are left with a much more balanced system. It's not difficult to get a mortgage in today's environment, but there are checks and balances and verifications of all of the application information to ensure we are lending responsibly to qualified borrowers.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
The best day in the entire loan process is the day I get to watch my customer receive the keys to their new home.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I have a crazy keen sense of smell. Sometimes that is a bad thing, but sometimes it comes in handy... I was working at a restaurant just out of high school and smelled something burning after the restaurant closed for the evening. I told several managers, who thought I was crazy, but then checked it out. Long story short, there was a fire inside the ceiling from their sign on the outside of the building. My early detection prevented any major damage from happening.
