Winner of Guaranteed Rate’s Ultimate Neighborhood Give Back Challenge to Celebrate with Day of Service in Waynesville, N.C. Sept. 25Sep 18 2014
Guaranteed Rate, one of the ten largest retail mortgage lenders in the U.S., announced it will be visiting the Haywood Pathways Center in Waynesville, N.C., along with home improvement expert Ty Pennington on Thursday, Sept. 25 to celebrate the grand prize in its first annual Ultimate Neighborhood Give Back Challenge, a nationwide search for people and organizations who are leading projects that make meaningful impacts in their communities. For winning the contest, the organization will receive $50,000 plus Pennington’s help for a day at the project site. Nearly 1,000 people are expected at the site, located at 141 Hemlock St. in Waynesville, to join in a day of volunteer service and festivities.
The Haywood Pathways Center is converting the site of a former prison in Haywood County, N.C., into a soup kitchen, homeless shelter and halfway house. The collaborative project between local government agencies, churches and non-profit organizations, which will remodel old prison dormitories into the shelter, seeks to transform lives by providing food, shelter, and a place to help ex-offenders rehabilitate into contributing citizens.
The event on Sept. 25 is open to the public. The schedule for the day is as follows (all times Eastern):
9:00 – 9:30 a.m., on stage near entrance to grounds: Guaranteed Rate executives to present $50,000 donation check to Haywood Pathways Center and opening remarks from local public officials.
9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., various locations at site: Volunteers, including Pennington, will be working on construction, renovation, painting and cleaning projects throughout the site. Other activities during this time include a car wash to benefit the project, along with food tents and trucks, a DJ, live radio broadcasts, and an artist creating a work with proceeds going to Haywood Pathways Center. Students from Western Carolina University will be collecting donations for the project around town throughout the day.
9:30 – 10:00 a.m., media center (located across the street from site at 154 Hemlock St.): Press availability with Ty Pennington, Guaranteed Rate executives, Haywood Pathways Center president Nick Honerkamp and local public officials.
Noon – 1 p.m. (estimated): Lunch break, additional media availability.

In addition, hard hat tours of the grounds will be offered at 10:15 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.
Media Information: Reserved media parking is available across the street from the site, next to the media center at 154 Hemlock St., Waynesville. The media center is equipped with internet access and electrical outlets for media use. Waynesville is located approximately 30 miles east of Asheville, N.C., along the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway (U.S. 23/74).
The Haywood Pathways Center bested more than 320 other entries from 49 states to win the Ultimate Neighborhood Give Back Challenge. Projects in the inaugural Challenge were judged on three criteria: impact to the community, a plan in place to execute the idea, and the number of votes received through the contest’s Facebook app. The contest’s app was developed and managed by Social Leverage, LLC.
