How to throw the perfect Fourth of July party

The Fourth of July is a favorite holiday for many. It’s a fun-filled day of celebrating summer and observing America’s independence. It’s also just a great excuse to throw a party! What better way to celebrate America’s birthday than an outdoor shindig with your family and friends? If you’re hosting a mid-summer bash, keep these party tips on ice as you fire up the grill and throw the perfect get-together at your home.

What’s on the Menu?

The biggest question for just about any party host: What is everyone going to eat? Luckily the Fourth of July makes this task pretty simple. Burgers, brats, hot dogs and chicken should be sizzling on the grill at all times, and there are a number of sides to choose from such as potato salad, pasta salad, baked beans and corn on the cob. You can’t forget those delicious snacks either- fresh fruit, chips and a veggie tray with dip are all must-haves. Finally, keep that dessert table stocked with some sugary treats such as cookies, brownies or red, white and blue popsicles.

Equally as important is the drink station. Be sure to have plenty of water available in addition to sodas, juices and adult beverages. And since it can get hot out there, make sure to stock up on plenty of ice. Whether or not you want to supply all the food and drinks is completely up to you. It may be easier to have everyone bring something on their own, however if you’re going that route be sure to organize with your guests beforehand so nothing gets left out. You don’t want to have any regrets when it comes to the menu!

Are You Not Entertained?

While most people will likely spend their time mingling with friends and family, it’s always a good idea to have some fun outdoor activities for your guests. Common party games such as cornhole, horseshoes, badminton, and volleyball are always a hit, and you can even have some friendly competitions like watermelon- or pie-eating contests. If there are going to be children present, pulling out the sprinkler or kiddie pool is always a great option, and filling up some water balloons can also lead to a lot of fun.

Get Patriotic, and Set the Mood

To get everyone in the spirit, encourage your guests to dress head to toe in red, white and blue. You can also offer a prize to the best overall outfit or tallest Uncle Sam hat. Be creative so that people want to participate in the action. Display plenty of American flags around the yard and cover all tables in patriotic colors. There can never be too much America on this day!

No party is complete without some tunes. Apps such as Spotify or Pandora have great summertime and Fourth of July playlists to choose from, or you can create your own! But be sure to be prepared with the proper music in advance—you don’t want to choose a random playlist you’ve never heard and throw off the vibe.

Light Up the Sky

Last but certainly not least, no Independence Day would be complete without the big finish: fireworks. Though before you light up the night sky, please check with local authorities to see if fireworks are legal in your area. If they are, make a plan that is cognizant of any fire hazards, and make certain you have safety precautions in place. If you are providing children with sparklers, be sure monitor and protect them at all times. Everyone loves a good fireworks display, and every great Fourth of July party should end with a bang.
